WHAT THE SPITTELBERG BOURGEOISIE NEVER WOULD HAVE IMAGINED…

KUSSMAUL . VIENNA

DO YOU KNOW ONE OF THE HOTTEST PLACES IN VIENNA THESE DAYS?

HISTORIC RESEARCH TURNED INTO ECLECTIC,

INDUSTRIAL CHIC WITH AN EXTRAORDINARY TWIST

Always full of people, always busy, always a great experience. Maybe it is not quite a secret anymore, but in this case I must make sure you know where the locals go! First thing you’ll notice is the interior design. It’s been done by experts (BEHF corporate architects) and you can see it in the details. Even the restrooms have been incorporated and will surprise you.

Kissing lips above the counter

There is an open kitchen (nowadays every new restaurant has to have one), the realm of chef and proprietor Mario Bernatovic. Above the bar, which is the heart and center of the venue, and the entrance to the open kitchen, hangs a huge vintage-looking advertising sign bearing in yellow cursive: „Kussmaul“, a rude version of the expression ‚kissing lips’.

What?! Why would you choose such a somewhat rough name for a restaurant, bar and café that pays great attention to quality and design and dresses her professionally trained staff (almost) black tie?

I did some research and learned that the name has been chosen with great care. Kußmaul has been the name of the co-founder of „Gottlieb Biedermeier“, a stereotype character representing the Viennese middle classes in the beginning of the 19th century.

Ok, so what? The place doesn’t look middle-class at all.

It all makes sense, when I tell you that the restaurant is located in the very center of Spittelberg, the most representative historic district of the architectural Biedermeier style remaining in Vienna. Ironically, at some point in history, the picturesque Spittelberg was also an area of prostitution and seediness. Dead-on!

Get inspired by the world around you.

I find the concept very professional yet relaxed and laid-back. The food is local, mostly organic* and freshly made, lots of the convenient products like bread or lemonades also home made.

Did I mention the patisserie yet?! OmG!, you can see the pastry chef prepare the most deliciously looking pancakes, pralines, tartlets, you name it, and the mouthwatering results waiting for the sweet tooth on display behind glass.

Go, book a table in the lovely glasshouse with strawberries and herbs planted in stainless stell boxes for a late breakfast or brunch with friends!

Indulge & Enjoy

Indulge in fresh eggs benedict on home made sourdough bread with baby spinach and a deliciously sweet little pancake on the side topped with orange-infused mascarpone and fruit salad…accompanied from either 3 (!) little cocktails or lemonades (or a mix of both alcoholic-non-alcoholic).

Speaking of the cocktails: They are truly exceptional. I have never been presented highballs with names like „Herr von Goldfuchs“ or „Salome Pockerl“, let alone decorated in such a manner. You don’t just order a Gin & Tonic. NO! What you get by the name of ‚Stelaris’ is a piece of art, that you haven’t seen before. Thinly sliced cucumber frozen to form a vessel within the glass. Decorated with pepper and fresh greens of coriander. It might happen that the waiter even finishes your drink off with an essence of rosewater before your eyes! Heaven!

Inspired to spoil yourself & have a great time? When are you making the reservation?

*To spare you embarrassment – especially those coming from an english speaking country: on the menu you’ll see a lot of ‚BYO‘ and even ‚BYO welcome‘ – that does not mean ‚Bring Your Own‘ but is to highlight regional, organic products! Oupsidaisy…
